The Australian film and television industry has launched a major legal action against one of Australia’s largest internet service providers for allegedly allowing its users to download pirated movies and TV shows.
The action follows months of wrangling between the movie and music industries and ISPs over the lengths to which internet providers need to go to prevent illegal file sharing on their networks.
But while the movie industry has now stepped up its aggression, the music industry has yet to take legal action against any internet providers over the issue. Michael Speck, who between 2004 and 2006 ran the music industry’s landmark case against KaZaA as the head of MIPI, said he believed legal precedents already established and the emergence of filtering technologies meant iiNet would lose the case.
But these images and most of the other scenes caught on Sampsonia were staged by artists Ben Kinsley and Robin Hewlett. The Google feature provides panoramic street-level photographs online so users can get a feel for wherever they might be heading - a virtual reconnaissance mission of sorts.

Like many first-time Street View users, Kinsley and Hewlett, then roommates, typed in their address and found their house. Kinsley and Hewlett soon found themselves discussing surveillance and virtual reality, and began considering how they might explore those issues and Street View through art.

Street View has a video game-like quality that lets users navigate through a street, and Hewlett said she considers the scenes she and Kinsley created as a sort of virtual reward for online explorers. Google - whose own employees posed outside the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., as its Street View vehicle rolled by - joined in the fun in Pittsburgh after Kinsley and Hewlett contacted the company.

Mr Rudd effectively used internet profiles on MySpace and Facebook and his slick Kevin07 website during last year’s federal election but, since becoming Prime Minister, he hasn’t had much time for the web.

But last night Mr Rudd sent an email to all his supporters informing them of his new website, KevinPM.com.au, which includes links to MySpace, Facebook, a new YouTube account, a Flickr photo sharing page and his newly created Twitter page for broadcasting short snappy text messages.

His Liberal counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull, also has accounts on Facebook, MySpace, Flickr and YouTube but, while Mr Rudd is new to Twitter, Mr Turnbull has been communicating with Twitter users since mid-October.

Mr Rudd has 24,479 friends on MySpace and 24,897 fans on Facebook, while Mr Turnbull has 292 MySpace friends and 5000 friends on Facebook.
